Mac4Lin: A Mac Interface for Linux boxes

August 6, 2010: The most recent version for Lucid is at Turn Lucid into a Mac OS X which invalidates the information below.

I don’t know what’s gone into the heads of some people to introduce a good set of themes for Linux powered boxes, but this sure will make some people green with envy.

I have a dear friend, an expert in Unix/LInux system administration and a Java /Python progrqammer, who swapped his powerful quad core Linux system with 8 Gbytes of memory for a 32in LCD dual core Mac. He sure was , is and will always be happy with the new setup. The industrial design of the Apple McIntosh computers is simply stunning!!

But wait, if all you want is the McIntosh interface, then you can install Mac4lin, a very cheap(hey, it’s Free!!) set of McIntosh GUI/themes for LInux. I don’t know how it will work out in my Ubuntu 9.04 laptop, but I will defer trying it for a few weeks. I already have the AWN (Avant Window Navigator) dockbar and this poor mans’ Mac app-bar would be enough for the moment. I would rather be productive with my programming and writing rather than fiddling for hours for the Best GUI EXperience Ever !?!!

For details on how to do desktop themes conversion, visit Turn Your Ubuntu Hardy to Mac-Leopard. I don’t know if this works for Jaunty. Tell me if you suceeded for Jaunty, and if the setup is stable.
NOTE: As usual, I yielded to temptation and installed the Mac4Lin GUI interface. Boy it is so aesthetically VERY GOOD! But I am using a FAKE! FAKE! FAKE!, what can I do? :)

If you have special setup such as 64 bit machines, get a tested version (currentlya at V1.0) at There is no reason to continue with expensive Windows software and there is no strong case to spend your money if you are not a millionaire on Mac hardware! The combination of mac4lin and the rotating windows effects of compiz(beryl)window manager is hard to beat by commercial software companies.

Optionally, you can also click on the first box in the right frame on my blog (http://phoenix-ani.blogspot.com). You do not need to Sourceforge.net login id. All you need is a valid email id. Each vote is associated with an email id, which needs confirmation that you actually voted (you will get an email giving a confirmation link, so all you need to do is click it). The whole voting process takes just 3 clicks.

I urge patrons to vote for Mac4Lin if they feel it should win. Mac4Lin is completing with projects like Xbox Media Center (XBMC) etc. I once again thank everyone for their continued support, feedback and appreciation. Mac4Lin exists today because of you all :) Do spread the word around about this.
